MatterShell

Explore how a signal can become a new way to perceive.

Directional Field concept: a direction is represented as a signal, translated by an explicit mapping, and rendered as an audio percept
Current stage
Instrument hardening · Pre-study

Research direction is defined; the measurement path and session records are being made dependable before a study protocol is frozen.

The research question

Can people learn a clear mapping between a signal and a percept?

MatterShell studies how measured information might be translated into an alternate percept, and how people learn that translation. The current Directional Field prototype maps a simulated direction to stereo position and tone frequency.

The Observatory makes the stages inspectable: source, transformation, output, task, and response. The aim is to test specific mappings with disciplined evidence, not to imply a new sense before one has been demonstrated.

Observatory

A macOS instrument for signal inspection, replay, training, and analysis. Its first learning task uses a simulated source and randomized trials.

Field experiments

Early sensor and wearable work explores how a measured input could enter the same explicit signal-to-percept pipeline.

Inspectable by design

Source, calibration state, transformation, percept, and response remain distinct so simulated and measured signals are not conflated.

Evidence boundary

The current trial prototype uses a simulated direction. No confirmatory participant results are documented. Field inputs remain uncalibrated or unverified, and session persistence is not yet established. MatterShell is exploratory research, not a validated sensory, medical, navigation, or safety product.
